01/20/2009   Fan Interview with Albert Hammond

In June of 2007, Rob Homan told his story on the Dutch Radio on the program called ‘Goudmijn’. This program allows listeners to tell a story about their personal connection with a famous song.  Rob told his story about “I’m A Train” by Albert Hammond.

“This song helped me pass a difficult time at school after doctors told me I had Asperger syndrome. When I bicycled to school, the song played in my head and it made me feel good, forget my problems. Since then, ‘I’m a Train’ has been my favorite song. Goudmijn gives away a piece of gold for the best story of the day, and the day I told mine, I got it. That was tremendous. But most of all I am happy about the fact that I was able to tell my story and to let people hear it!”

Albert decided to invite Rob, who one day wants to be a journalist, to do an interview with him for his website.  Here it is:

In June of 2008, you told an interviewer that you sometimes write songs on the highway.  Did a train pass when you wrote ‘I’m A Train’?

No.  I often write songs about different or abstract things in the world, songs that are not love songs.  I have written songs about trains, flies, the ding of a metronome – I like to write about things that are not usually written about.

Is there anywhere else where you get inspiration to write?

I get inspiration from everything in life.  When I feel things or think about things, it travels through my body, like it’s getting processed, and it becomes a song.  Sometimes it just comes out very quickly.

Who’s Rebecca?

She was a Playboy bunny that I met at the Playboy Club in St. Louis in 1972.  The rest is in the song.

Do you have a special bond with a particular song of yours, like “I’m a Train” is special for me?

I think I would have to say “When I Need You” because it says everything about life itself.

Your son, Albert Hammond Jr., is a singer as well. Did he got his passion for music from you?

I don’t know.  That’s not a question I can answer.  You’d have to ask him.

Have you ever wanted to return to Gibraltar?

Yes, of course.  I still do.  It’s where I grew up.

At this time, you do not perform as much as you did between 1970 and 1980.  What are you doing these days?

I am very busy writing new songs.  I am also working on developing a musical based on an idea I had for a story many years ago.  Recently I have done some live apperances and television shows in Europe.  I plan to do a European tour in summer of 2010.

Have you ever regretted being a singer? So did you ever wanted to do something else?

No, I always wanted to do this since I was eight years old.
